A murder investigation is underway following the death of a 27-year-old pregnant woman in Donaghadee, County Down.
Police were called to a property in the Elmfield Walk area shortly after 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, where they discovered an unconscious woman with severe injuries. Emergency services from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service provided medical assistance at the scene, but the woman—identified as Sarah Montgomery, a mother-of-two—was pronounced dead at the location.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that Montgomery was pregnant at the time of her death. "A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody, assisting with enquiries," he said. "This investigation is still in its early stages. Our thoughts are with Sarah's family as they navigate this devastating loss. They are being supported by specially trained officers."
Chief Inspector Yvonne McManus of the PSNI's North Area division acknowledged the profound shock the incident is likely to cause within the local community. "Police cordons remain in place and increased patrols will be visible in the area," she said. "We encourage anyone with concerns to approach our officers. We are here to help."
Chief Inspector McManus also emphasized the broader context of gender-based violence. "We are acutely aware of the impact violence against women and girls has across our society. Tackling this issue remains a core priority for us, and we are committed to working closely with the community to provide reassurance, build trust, and ensure safety."
