Nicholas Pooran Announces Retirement from International Cricket at 29

In a surprising turn of events, West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has officially announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The talented left-hander, who debuted in 2016, brought the curtains down on a distinguished career that spanned 61 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 106 T20 Internationals (T20Is).

The announcement was made via Instagram, where Pooran shared a heartfelt statement:
“After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.”

Pooran also reflected on the honour of captaining the national side, a role he undertook in 30 matches across formats. Despite a mixed record of eight wins, he described the experience as a cherished privilege. His tenure as captain ended following West Indies’ disappointing first-round exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

“Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me,” Pooran said. “To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”

He expressed deep gratitude to fans, family, and teammates:
“To the fans – thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates – thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all.”

Pooran had recently taken a break from international cricket and was not included in the squad for the ongoing West Indies tour of Ireland and England. He reiterated his enduring support for West Indies cricket, stating:
“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead.”

During his international career, Pooran amassed 1,983 runs in ODIs, including three centuries and 11 half-centuries, and recorded 25 dismissals behind the stumps. In T20Is, he scored 2,275 runs at a strike rate of 136.39, including 23 fifties and a top score of 98 – making him the highest run-scorer for West Indies in the format and the most capped West Indian T20I player.

Cricket West Indies acknowledged the significance of his departure in an official statement:
“Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career. A world-class player and a game changer, Nicholas leaves the game as the most capped West Indian in T20 Internationals and the leading T20I run scorer. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket.”

Pooran’s exit marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, as the team bids farewell to one of its most dynamic and charismatic performers in the modern era.
