Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Bihar on Friday, marking a significant political move as the state prepares for upcoming elections. The visit is expected to address recent controversies surrounding the alleged disrespect shown to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a development that has stirred sharp political reactions across party lines.
Sources suggest the Prime Minister will take aim at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over a widely circulated video featuring party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. In the clip, Yadav is seen receiving a photograph of Dr. Ambedkar—reportedly on his birthday—without acknowledgement, subsequently placing it near a chair where he was resting his foot. The incident has triggered widespread criticism, particularly from Dalit communities. ये ‘चित्र’ नहीं, आरजेडी का ‘चरित्र’ है।#ShameOnLaluFamily #DalitVirodhiRJD #BabasahebAmbedkar pic.twitter.com/iP9BNBYkGb
The controversy prompted the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to write to Bihar’s Chief Secretary, seeking a detailed report within 15 days. The Commission has asked for clarity on the legal provisions invoked in the case, including whether an FIR has been registered and if any arrests have followed. Earlier, the Bihar SC Commission had also issued a notice to Yadav, citing similar allegations of disrespect during Ambedkar Jayanti.
The timing of the Prime Minister’s visit is seen as strategic, as the BJP intensifies its campaign in a state where caste dynamics continue to play a decisive role. A 2022 caste-based survey revealed that Scheduled Castes constitute 19.65% and Scheduled Tribes 1.68% of Bihar’s population—segments that could prove pivotal in the electoral outcome.
The BJP, which faced significant setbacks in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections—losing nine seats in Bihar and 28 in Uttar Pradesh—is looking to regain lost ground by projecting itself as a defender of Dalit rights. The party has launched a coordinated attack on the RJD and its allies, deploying senior leaders including Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Bhupender Yadav to directly target Lalu Yadav and his party.
During his visit to Siwan, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several development initiatives across water, rail, and power sectors. Key among them is the launch of a Vande Bharat Express that will connect Pataliputra in Bihar with Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The total value of the projects is estimated to exceed ₹10,000 crore, underlining the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the state.
With political tensions running high and public sentiment sharply divided, the Prime Minister’s return to Bihar is expected to draw nationwide attention in the days ahead.
