Amid escalating unrest in Los Angeles, U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized the federal deployment of an additional 2,000 members of the California National Guard in response to ongoing immigration-related demonstrations. This move brings the total number of National Guard personnel activated under federal orders to over 4,100.
The announcement follows the Pentagon’s earlier deployment of approximately 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles. According to defense officials, the Marines have been tasked with protecting federal property and personnel, including immigration enforcement agents. In accordance with the Posse Comitatus Act, the Marines will not engage in any direct law enforcement activities.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the President’s directive in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “At the order of the President, the Department of Defense is mobilizing an additional 2,000 California National Guard members to support ICE and ensure the safety of federal law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties.”
The significant military mobilization, particularly in a city with a large Latino population, has drawn sharp criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom. In a strongly worded response, Governor Newsom condemned the move as “deranged,” stating, “U.S. Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They shouldn’t be deployed on American soil against their fellow citizens to fulfill the fantasy of a dictatorial President. This is un-American.”
The federal response comes in the wake of violent demonstrations that erupted across Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday. Protesters reportedly set vehicles ablaze and looted several stores, prompting law enforcement to deploy tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.
Speaking from Washington, President Trump characterized the unrest as the work of “professional agitators and insurrectionists,” emphasizing the need for decisive action to restore order.
