Zagreb, Croatia – In a landmark diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Zagreb on Wednesday, marking the first-ever official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia. The visit, part of a broader three-nation tour, reflects India’s intent to deepen engagement with key European partners.
Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received at the airport by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković—a gesture underscoring the importance both nations place on their growing bilateral relationship. "A short while ago, landed in Zagreb, Croatia. This is a special visit, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to a valued European partner. I am grateful to Prime Minister Andrej Plenković for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport," Modi posted on X.
At his hotel, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed with chants of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” by a spirited group of Indian community members. The atmosphere was further enriched by cultural performances and a unique interlude where Croatian nationals, dressed in white, joined PM Modi in chanting the Gayatri Mantra and other Sanskrit verses—an extraordinary reflection of the shared cultural resonance between the two nations.
Sharing visuals of the reception on social media, Prime Minister Modi noted, “The bonds of culture are strong and vibrant! Here is a part of the welcome in Zagreb. Happy to see Indian culture has so much respect in Croatia…”
In another post, he highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in Croatia’s progress and their enduring connection to their roots. “In Zagreb, I interacted with some members of the Indian community, who accorded me an unforgettable welcome. There is immense enthusiasm among the Indian community here about this visit and its impact in making the bond between our nations stronger than ever before!” he remarked.
PM Modi’s arrival in Zagreb concludes his tri-nation tour, which included significant stops in Cyprus and Canada, where he attended the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis. His visit to Croatia is expected to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, culture, and strategic partnerships.
Earlier interactions between the two leaders include a brief meeting at the COP-26 Summit in 2021 and participation in the virtual India-European Union Leaders’ Meeting the same year. Talks during this visit are anticipated to reinforce momentum in India-Croatia relations and explore new avenues of collaboration across sectors of mutual interest.
