Elon Musk Acknowledges Scindia-Shotwell Talks Following Starlink’s India Licence Milestone

New Delhi – Days after Starlink secured a long-awaited license from India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk publicly acknowledged a high-level meeting between Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and SpaceX President & COO Gwynne Shotwell.

The meeting, which took place on June 17, underscored India’s accelerating engagement with global satellite internet providers, as the country pushes forward with its Digital India initiative. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk reposted updates about the interaction between the minister and Shotwell, signaling the importance SpaceX places on its growing footprint in India.

Earlier this month, Starlink became the third company to receive DoT approval for delivering satellite-based internet services in India, joining the ranks of Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. Amazon’s Project Kuiper remains under regulatory review.

Following the meeting, Minister Scindia described the discussion as a “productive exchange” focused on collaborative opportunities in satellite communications to further India's digital ambitions. “Had a productive meeting with Ms. @Gwynne_Shotwell, President & COO of @SpaceX, on India’s next frontier in connectivity. We delved into opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India’s soaring ambitions and empower every citizen across the country," Scindia posted on X.

He added that satellite technologies were not just relevant, but transformative for inclusive growth. “Ms. Shotwell appreciated the license granted to @Starlink, calling it a great start to the journey,” he noted.

Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband access across the globe—particularly in remote and underserved regions. Unlike traditional satellite services that rely on distant geostationary satellites, Starlink operates the world’s largest low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, positioned approximately 550 km above the Earth’s surface.

Currently comprising around 7,000 satellites, Starlink’s constellation is expected to expand to over 40,000 in the coming years. This expansive network forms a dynamic mesh that delivers robust internet services capable of supporting bandwidth-intensive activities such as video streaming, online gaming, and real-time communications.

Starlink’s entry into the Indian market marks a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and bring next-generation connectivity to its rural and remote populations.
