Berlin/Memmingen – June 4, 2025 — A Ryanair flight carrying 185 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Germany late last night after encountering a violent thunderstorm, leaving several passengers and crew members injured.
According to German authorities, nine individuals—including a two-year-old child and a crew member—sustained injuries when Flight FR8, en route from Berlin to Milan, encountered severe turbulence linked to what meteorological experts have identified as a “supercell” storm system. Supercells are rare, highly organized thunderstorms known for their extreme instability, powerful updrafts, and potential to generate tornadoes.
Data from aviation tracking service Flightradar24 indicates the aircraft abruptly altered course mid-flight as it encountered deteriorating conditions over southern Germany. The flight diverted to Memmingen Airport in Bavaria, where the crew successfully executed an emergency landing.
Emergency responders met the aircraft upon arrival, with three of the injured passengers transported to a local hospital. Among the injured were a toddler who suffered bruising, a woman with a head injury, and a passenger treated for back trauma. Aboard the aircraft, one passenger described the ordeal as “chaotic and dangerous.”
The German Meteorological Service had issued multiple warnings for the region ahead of the storm, citing risks of large hail and damaging wind gusts. In the nearby city of Ulm, reports confirmed a tornado had torn roofs from homes along several streets.
Due to ongoing weather-related restrictions, the flight was grounded after landing. Ryanair has since arranged alternative ground transport, including buses, to assist passengers in reaching their final destination in Milan.
Both Ryanair and German law enforcement agencies are expected to issue official statements regarding the incident later today.
