Bengaluru | June 4, 2025 — What began as a historic moment of celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans turned tragic on Wednesday, as a stampede-like situation near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people and left dozens injured.
The city was in a jubilant mood following RCB's thrilling six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final held in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, which secured the franchise's maiden Indian Premier League title after an 18-year-long pursuit. However, the festivities took a devastating turn when large crowds gathered near the stadium, where Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to felicitate the victorious players.
Among the deceased was a child, according to preliminary reports. Several others, including critically injured individuals, were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital. Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the scene showed chaotic moments, with police struggling to manage the crowd and resorting to mild use of force in a bid to restore order.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar acknowledged the loss of lives but refrained from confirming the final casualty figures at the time of reporting. “We are coordinating with the authorities to ensure that those injured receive immediate medical care,” he said.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya expressed his condolences and called for restraint. “Let us celebrate responsibly. This moment of pride for Bengaluru should not be overshadowed by grief,” he posted on social media.
The incident comes just hours after RCB's landmark IPL triumph, a significant achievement for the team and especially for cricketing icon Virat Kohli, who has remained loyal to the franchise since its inception in 2008.
Authorities are expected to launch a detailed investigation into the cause of the crowd surge, as questions mount over crowd control measures and event planning. Meanwhile, celebrations across the city have been subdued as Bengaluru mourns the loss of lives during what was meant to be a moment of glory.
