U.S. Vetoes UN Ceasefire Resolution on Gaza, Drawing Global Condemnation

On June 4, 2025, the United States exercised its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The resolution, backed by 14 of the 15 Council members, also demanded the release of all hostages and unrestricted humanitarian aid access throughout the enclave.

Acting U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, defended the veto, stating that the resolution failed to condemn Hamas and did not address the group's disarmament or withdrawal from Gaza. She argued that passing such a measure would undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and potentially embolden Hamas.

The veto has drawn significant international criticism. China and Pakistan condemned the U.S. decision, accusing it of obstructing peace efforts. Palestinian officials labeled the veto as "aggressive and immoral," asserting that it provided Israel with a green light to continue its military operations.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with over 54,000 Palestinians reportedly killed since the conflict reignited in 2023. Aid organizations have faced challenges in delivering assistance due to safety concerns and restrictions, exacerbating the crisis for the enclave's more than two million residents.

In response to the Security Council's deadlock, the Arab Group plans to bring a similar resolution to the UN General Assembly, where it is expected to pass given the absence of veto power. While General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant symbolic weight and reflect global consensus on pressing issues.

The United States has proposed an alternative resolution emphasizing a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages and humanitarian aid delivery. However, this proposal has faced skepticism from other Council members who advocate for a more immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community remains divided on the path forward, with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifying and the prospects for a lasting peace appearing increasingly uncertain.
