Two days after a tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives, police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident. The stampede occurred during a public celebration organised to mark Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory.
According to police sources, the arrested individuals include Nikhil Sosale, a senior marketing executive with the RCB management, and Sunil Mathew, a representative of DNA Entertainment, the event management company responsible for organising the celebrations. Sosale was apprehended while en route to Kempegowda International Airport.
The police have also registered cases against the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, grievous injury, unlawful assembly, and endangering human life through rash or negligent conduct. Authorities stated that KSCA officials named in the FIR are currently absconding.
In a sweeping administrative response, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday ordered the suspension of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda. Alongside him, three senior police officers—Additional Commissioner (West) Vikas Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekar H. Tekkannanavar, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna—have also been suspended for alleged lapses in crowd control and security measures.
The Chief Minister has further directed the arrest of representatives from the RCB team, DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., and the KSCA, signalling strong disciplinary action and a commitment to accountability.
The investigation into the stampede continues as officials examine lapses in planning, coordination, and emergency response that led to the deadly chaos outside one of the city’s most prominent sports venues.
