Honduras Reinstates Mask Mandate Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases and Respiratory Illnesses

More than five years after the global outbreak of COVID-19, Honduras has reintroduced mandatory mask-wearing in public spaces in response to a surge in respiratory illnesses and the spread of a new variant of the virus across the country.

The Honduran Ministry of Health confirmed two COVID-related deaths this week—both individuals reportedly had pre-existing health conditions—raising the national death toll for 2025 to six. According to official statistics, the country has recorded 654 COVID-19 cases between January and July this year, surpassing the 596 cases reported during the same period in 2024.

The new safety measures, which came into effect on Thursday, mandate the use of face masks in high-risk and enclosed areas, including hospitals, airports, public transportation, shopping centers, banks, schools, and other crowded venues. In addition, state institutions have been instructed to implement temporary remote work protocols.

Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant by completing their COVID-19 and influenza vaccination schedules and seeking medical attention if they experience any respiratory symptoms. The Ministry continues to recommend preventive practices such as frequent hand washing and the use of antibacterial sanitizers.

Officials have also stated that monitoring of virus variants will be intensified, and public awareness campaigns will be expanded. The Ministry of Health emphasized that the current protocols are subject to continuous review and could be further tightened if infection rates escalate.
