New Delhi, July 30, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a sharp and wide-ranging address in Parliament on Tuesday, taking on the opposition—particularly the Congress—for its criticism of Operation Sindoor, the recent retaliatory military strike against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 Indian lives.
Speaking during the ongoing Monsoon Session, the Prime Minister described the opposition's stance as symptomatic of the "weak governance" of previous regimes. “Even if our hearts don’t align with a party’s interests, they must align with the nation’s,” Modi said, urging for national unity during times of crisis.
Targeting Congress Over National Security Stance
Modi accused the Congress of consistently undermining the armed forces. “Terrorists are crying, their masterminds are crying, and seeing them cry—some people here are crying too,” he said. Drawing parallels with past military actions, including the surgical strikes and the Balakot airstrikes, Modi alleged that the opposition has routinely questioned India’s military resolve.
“They mocked the surgical strikes. They doubted the airstrikes. Now they’re asking, ‘Why did you stop after Operation Sindoor?’ It’s not just me—the entire nation is laughing at them,” he said.
On the Pahalgam Attack and the Nation’s Response
The Prime Minister condemned the communal nature of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where civilians were reportedly shot after being asked their religion. “It was a calculated attempt to plunge India into communal violence. I thank the people of India for seeing through the conspiracy and standing united,” he said.
He credited India’s armed forces for launching precision strikes within 22 minutes of the attack, defying Pakistani nuclear threats. “India acted decisively on the night of May 6-7. Pakistan was left helpless. Their airbases are still reeling from the impact—many remain in ICU,” Modi declared.
Redrawing the Strategic Narrative
Highlighting India's offensive depth, Modi stated: “We struck at the heart of Pakistan’s terror infrastructure—Bahawalpur, Muridke—all flattened. Our intent was clear, and Pakistan understood it well.”
He added that Pakistan’s military establishment had reached out to India, asking for a cessation of strikes. “Pakistan now knows—India’s response is no longer symbolic. It is resolute and, when necessary, overwhelming.”
On Foreign Policy and U.S. Warning
Revealing diplomatic backchannel exchanges, Modi noted that U.S. Vice President JD Vance attempted to contact him on May 9, warning of an impending Pakistani retaliation. “I told him—if they act, they will pay a price they can’t afford,” Modi recounted.
Congress Accused of Playing into Pakistan’s Hands
Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress for allegedly echoing Pakistan’s narratives. “Rather than supporting the Indian jawan, Congress leaders were questioning our government’s resolve—asking ‘Where is the 56-inch chest now?’ even as bodies lay in Pahalgam,” he said.
“Congress has a history of downplaying India’s military victories. From refusing to acknowledge Kargil Vijay Diwas to now doubting Operation Sindoor, their record is consistent and unfortunate.”
He further accused the party of having "mortgaged India’s strategic interests," citing the Indus Waters Treaty as a diplomatic blunder. “80% of our river waters were gifted to Pakistan. What kind of diplomacy was that? Farmers were ignored then, as they are now.”
Defence Manufacturing and Self-Reliance
Underscoring the success of the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, Modi praised India’s indigenous defence capabilities. “On May 9, when Pakistan launched nearly 1,000 drones and missiles, our air defence systems neutralised the threat mid-air. Young Indian engineers in private firms played a decisive role,” he said.
He highlighted that Make-in-India drones and missiles proved superior to Pakistani imports, adding that earlier governments had deliberately stifled India’s defence manufacturing.
A Call for Unity Beyond Politics
Ending on a poetic and emotional note, Modi appealed for bipartisan unity in matters of national security:
“Let us debate with all our might—but amid all questions, let our respect for the soldier’s sacrifice and a mother’s sindoor remain unwavering.”
“When Mother India is attacked, our response must be fierce and unrelenting. No matter where the enemy hides, our commitment is to Bharat.”
The Prime Minister’s impassioned speech marked a defining moment in Parliament’s monsoon session, framing national security as a non-negotiable, bipartisan commitment. With Operation Sindoor now etched as a bold chapter in India’s defence doctrine, the political debate around its execution and aftermath continues to dominate national discourse.
