Mumbai: Passengers at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs were left startled after a seven-foot-long snake was spotted inside the terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Thursday, February 19. The unexpected sighting briefly triggered panic among travelers navigating the crowded concourse.
Snake Found Perched Above Air India Gate
The reptile, identified as an Indian rat snake, was discovered coiled atop an air-conditioning unit near Gate 3 of Air India. Seemingly undisturbed by the commotion below, the snake appeared to be resting in the cool indoor environment. Although it did not display aggressive behavior or attempt to harm anyone, the sheer size of the reptile inside a high-traffic airport area alarmed both passengers and staff.
While some travelers hurried away from the scene in fear, others quickly captured videos on their mobile phones. Within minutes, the footage began circulating widely on social media platforms, rapidly gaining traction.
Swift Rescue Operation
Airport authorities promptly alerted the animal welfare organization Asha: The Hope for Animals Welfare Trust. A trained rescue team arrived at the scene and carefully secured the snake without incident. Officials later confirmed that the reptile was safely relocated and released back into its natural habitat. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Growing Concerns Over Urban Wildlife Encounters
The video, shared on Instagram by the account “dahisarkarofficial,” has since garnered substantial online attention. Environmental observers note that increasing urbanization and the steady decline of natural habitats are pushing wildlife closer to human settlements. Such encounters, they warn, may become more frequent as cities continue to expand into previously undisturbed ecosystems.
While the incident concluded without harm, it underscores the evolving challenges of coexistence between urban development and wildlife in rapidly growing metropolitan centers.
