Pune, July 5 — In a startling development in the alleged rape case reported from Pune’s Kondhwa area, investigators have revealed that the woman who initially claimed she was sexually assaulted by a man posing as a courier delivery agent later admitted to filing the complaint against a known acquaintance “out of anger.”
The complainant, a 26-year-old IT professional, had earlier informed police that she was alone in her apartment in a posh residential complex when an unidentified man arrived under the guise of delivering a parcel and allegedly raped her. She claimed the assailant took a selfie using her phone, partially showing his face and her back, and left a threatening message saying he had compromising images and would leak them online.
However, subsequent investigation by Pune police revealed that the accused and the woman were known to each other for several years. The two had met at a community event and had developed a friendship, meeting often at her residence, especially when her family was away.
According to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the woman later admitted during questioning that the accused was invited over on the day of the incident. She stated that while she did not consent to sexual intercourse that evening, the man allegedly forced himself on her. “So out of anger, she filed a complaint with the police that she was raped,” the Commissioner was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Inconsistencies Uncovered in the Complaint
Forensic analysis of the alleged threatening selfie revealed further discrepancies. Contrary to the woman’s earlier claim, it was she who had taken the photograph, and the original, unedited image clearly displayed the man’s face. Police also found that the purported threatening message—“I’ll be back”—was manually typed into the phone, not left by the suspect.
Initial suspicions that a chemical substance was sprayed on the woman’s face were also ruled out following forensic examination, officials confirmed.
Sources familiar with the investigation noted that both families were acquainted and that the accused, described as a highly qualified professional, had previously visited the woman’s residence on several occasions. The visits were reportedly consensual.
Ongoing Investigation and Mental Health Concerns
Police have indicated that the woman’s psychological condition is currently fragile. “We are still examining the underlying reasons behind the false claims. At this stage, we are not drawing final conclusions, as her mental state is not stable,” an official close to the investigation stated.
Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the filing of the complaint and are expected to present their findings in due course.
This case has raised broader questions around the challenges of balancing sensitive crime reporting with the protection of due process and mental health considerations in high-profile investigations.
