Washington, D.C., July 14: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States will supply additional Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, just days after the Pentagon reversed an earlier decision to pause segments of its military aid to Kyiv.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, Trump said the decision was made in light of recent escalations by Russia and Ukraine's ongoing need for air defense capabilities.
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because [Russian President Vladimir] Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening. But there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it,” Trump remarked.
The president did not specify whether the upcoming deliveries would include complete Patriot air defense systems or merely additional munitions. He also declined to confirm the quantity, noting only that Ukraine “would have some because they do need protection.”
Significantly, Trump emphasized that the cost of the aid would be borne by European allies.
“But the European Union is paying for them. We are not paying anything for them… This will be a business for us,” he stated, underlining his longstanding position on greater burden-sharing among NATO and EU partners.
Trump’s comments came amid media speculation surrounding a forthcoming U.S. military aid package that may include both defensive and offensive missile systems. Although he confirmed authorizing the shipment of certain defensive weapons earlier, Trump has yet to provide details about the scope or timeline of future assistance.
In recent weeks, Trump has stepped up his public criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, holding him accountable for the failure of ceasefire negotiations mediated by Washington.
“I’m unhappy with him. He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless,” Trump said, in reference to Putin’s handling of diplomatic overtures.
Meanwhile, Russia has continued to launch strikes across Ukraine, claiming that its military targets are strictly strategic in nature. Moscow maintains that the attacks are in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, which it alleges have impacted civilian infrastructure and residential areas.
As the conflict grinds on with no clear resolution in sight, the additional deployment of air defense systems underscores the deepening security involvement of Western powers, and highlights the ongoing geopolitical tension shaping the region.
