Family of Kidnapped Irish Aid Worker Gena Heraty Appeals for Public Prayers and Patience Amid Ongoing Efforts

The family of Gena Heraty, the Irish humanitarian abducted in Haiti, has issued a heartfelt appeal for continued prayers and support, urging the public to keep Gena and her fellow captives in their thoughts as international efforts to secure their release intensify.

Ms. Heraty, a native of Westport, County Mayo, was among nine individuals — including a three-year-old child — who were kidnapped on Sunday, August 3, 2025, by heavily armed assailants from the Sainte-Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff, located approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. She serves as the director of the facility, which is operated by the international humanitarian organization Nos Petits Frères et SÅ“urs (NPH) and provides care for over 270 children, including around 50 with disabilities.

On Tuesday, Tánaiste Simon Harris spoke directly with Haitian Foreign Minister Harvel Jean-Baptiste, urging the Haitian authorities to do everything within their power to secure the safe release of Ms. Heraty and the other hostages.

In a public statement, Gena’s family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of global solidarity, saying:

“We, the family of Gena Heraty, are still coming to terms with the awful news that Gena and seven others were kidnapped from the St. Hélène property in Kenscoff, Haiti, on August 3, 2025.”

“We continue to work closely with Nos Petits Frères et SÅ“urs (NPH) in both Haiti and Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and various international partners. All have assured us that every possible effort is being made to ensure the safe and swift release of Gena and those taken with her.”

“Gena is loved and respected by so many people, as is evident from the overwhelming expressions of concern, support, and prayers we have received in recent days. We are truly grateful for each and every message.”

The family also emphasized the need for discretion during this critical time:

“Given the sensitivity and evolving nature of the situation, and out of respect for the ongoing diplomatic and operational efforts, we are not in a position to share further details at present. We echo NPH International’s call for patience and understanding during this deeply difficult period.”

Concluding their statement, the family added:

“We continue to ask that you keep Gena, everyone taken with her, and their families in your hearts as we pray for their safe and speedy return.”

Ms. Heraty has long been recognized for her unwavering commitment to vulnerable children in Haiti and is widely regarded as a figure of compassion, resilience, and integrity within the humanitarian community.
