Washington – FBI agents raided the Washington, D.C.-area residence of former National Security Adviser John Bolton early Friday as part of a documents-related investigation, according to a source cited by the Associated Press. The operation was carried out around 7 a.m. at Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, reportedly under the direction of FBI Director Kash Patel, a former Trump administration official told the New York Post.
Soon after the raid began, Patel posted a cryptic message on X, stating, “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission.”
The development comes just days after Bolton publicly criticized U.S. tariff policy, remarks that coincided with the lead-up to a high-profile summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.
In a recent interview, Bolton described Trump as an “aberrational president” and warned that U.S.-India relations were in “a very bad place.” He sharply criticized Washington’s “confused” approach toward New Delhi, questioning the decision to impose a 25 percent penalty on India over Russian oil imports while exempting China from similar measures.
Bolton has been outspoken against the administration’s trade policy. In a social media post last week, he wrote: “When Trump slapped tariffs on India for buying Russian oil, but not China which also purchases Russian oil, it may have pushed India further into the Beijing-Moscow axis. This lack of focus by the Trump Admin is an unforced error.”
Bolton’s Strained Relationship with Trump
Bolton, who served as Trump’s third National Security Adviser for 17 months, often clashed with the president on major foreign policy issues, including Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea, according to the Associated Press.
The Trump administration previously sought to block the release of Bolton’s memoir, alleging it contained classified information. Earlier this year, after returning to office, President Trump revoked the security clearances of more than 40 former intelligence officials, including Bolton. He was among three former aides whose protective details were also withdrawn.
