Guruvayur Temple to Hold Purification Ritual After Social Media Reel Controversy

Thrissur: The Guruvayur Devaswom has announced that a punyaham (ritual purification) will be performed in the temple pond following a controversy in which a non-Hindu woman washed her feet in the sacred pond while filming a social media reel. In addition, six days of poojas and sheevelis will be conducted to restore the sanctity of the temple, Devaswom Board officials confirmed.

Starting tomorrow morning, 18 poojas and 18 sheevelis will be held. Consequently, darshan for devotees will remain restricted until noon.

The incident came to light after social media influencer Jasmin Jaffer entered the temple pond to film a reel, which she later shared on Instagram. Following this, the Guruvayur Devaswom administrator lodged a formal complaint. As per temple rules, filming videos or reels within the temple pond—considered an integral part of the shrine—without prior permission is strictly prohibited. A similar ban on video recording is already in place on the temple’s nadappura (corridor) under a High Court directive.

The administrator stated in the complaint that the act amounted to hurting religious sentiments and potentially inciting communal disharmony.

In response, Jasmin issued a public apology on social media, acknowledging her mistake:
"I realize that a video I created caused distress to my well-wishers and others. I never intended to hurt anyone or create problems. Out of ignorance, I made a mistake, and I sincerely apologize to everyone for it."
