The central government has granted approval for the India–Pakistan encounter in the 2025 Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Dubai on September 14. The Ministry of Sports confirmed that there would be no restrictions on India’s participation in the fixture. However, the long-standing policy of not permitting bilateral series with Pakistan will remain unchanged.
The clarification comes in the wake of criticism from various quarters following the Pahalgam terror attack and ongoing cross-border tensions. The ministry emphasized that preventing participation in international championships would be in violation of the Olympic Charter.
Highlighting the importance of strengthening India’s position as a credible venue for international sporting events, the ministry affirmed that Indian players and teams will continue to participate in tournaments that include Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani teams and athletes will be allowed to compete in international competitions hosted in India.
To further enhance India’s role as a global sporting hub, the ministry also announced streamlined visa procedures for international tournaments. At the same time, it reiterated that Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral series, nor will Pakistan be invited to play such series in India.
This decision will not affect the Asia Cup or upcoming World Cup tournaments. At present, India and Pakistan face each other only in ICC events and the Asia Cup conducted under the aegis of the Asian Cricket Council.
