Noida, August 25 — The Noida Police on Monday arrested the fourth accused in connection with the brutal dowry murder of 28-year-old Nikki, who was allegedly set ablaze by her husband at their residence in Greater Noida’s Sirsa village.
Police officials confirmed that Nikki’s father-in-law and brother-in-law were the latest to be apprehended. The father-in-law was arrested near Sirsa Chauraha, close to the crime scene. Earlier, police had taken into custody Nikki’s husband, Vipin Bhati, on Saturday and his mother, Daya Bhati, on Sunday. Both the brother-in-law and parents-in-law face charges of demanding dowry, along with Vipin.
According to the complaint filed by Nikki’s sister, Kanchan, who witnessed the incident, Nikki was set on fire on August 21 in the presence of her young son. Despite being rushed from a private hospital in Noida to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, she succumbed to severe burn injuries in transit. Shockingly, Kanchan herself is married into the same family.
Family members allege that Nikki, who married Vipin in 2016, faced harassment for dowry soon after her wedding. Despite fulfilling lavish demands at the time of marriage—including gold ornaments, a Scorpio SUV, and a Bullet motorcycle—the family claims that Vipin and his relatives continued to press for more. Nearly nine years into the marriage, Nikki was allegedly being coerced for ₹36 lakh.
Investigations further revealed that the fatal assault followed an altercation over Nikki’s wish to reopen a beauty parlour she once ran and her posting of Instagram reels. Police interrogation reports indicate that Vipin opposed both, citing family restrictions.
“On August 21, around 3:30 pm, Nikki informed Vipin that she and her sister planned to reopen the parlour. When Vipin objected, Nikki insisted that no one could prevent them. Vipin became violent, assaulting her, and the dispute escalated,” said Kasna Station House Officer Dharmendra Shukla, citing interrogation details.
The case has once again ignited outrage over the persistent menace of dowry-related violence, highlighting the urgent need for stronger enforcement of laws to protect women from domestic harassment and abuse.
