PM Modi to Inaugurate ₹11,000-Crore Highway Projects to Transform Delhi-NCR Connectivity

New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday inaugurate two landmark highway projects worth nearly ₹11,000 crore in Rohini, designed to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The projects — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — form part of a comprehensive decongestion plan for the capital. The ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 pm, during which the Prime Minister will also inspect the projects.

“These initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi’s vision of building world-class infrastructure that improves ease of living and ensures seamless mobility,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement on Saturday.

Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II)

The Prime Minister will dedicate the 76-km UER-II, envisaged as Delhi’s third Ring Road, constructed at a cost of ₹6,445 crore. The highway links Mahipalpur near Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to Alipur in North Delhi, with four of its five construction packages set to open for traffic today.

The corridor is expected to decongest Delhi’s overburdened Ring Road and Dhaula Kuan junction, while providing faster access from Gurugram, South and West Delhi to NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. It also connects to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Akshardham, offering improved routes from Haryana and Rajasthan to Uttarakhand.

In a push for sustainability, the project has utilized nearly 10 lakh metric tonnes of inert material recovered through biomining of Delhi’s legacy landfill waste.

Key Specifications:

  • Length: 75.71 km (54.21 km in Delhi, 21.50 km in Haryana)

  • Cost: ₹6,445 crore

  • Packages: Five (four being inaugurated today)

A new 65-km highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has also been approved. Once completed, the corridor will integrate with five major NCR expressways — Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressway.

Dwarka Expressway

Alongside UER-II, Modi will inaugurate the Delhi stretch of the 29-km Dwarka Expressway, featuring a 5.1-km tunnel that provides direct access to IGI Airport.

The Haryana section, covering 29 km from Mahipalpur to Kherki Daula on NH-48, was inaugurated in March 2024. The expressway, when fully operational, is expected to significantly ease congestion along the busy Delhi-Gurugram corridor, improving connectivity for commuters from western Delhi and surrounding NCR suburbs.

Key Specifications:

  • Total Length: 29 km

  • Delhi Stretch: 10.1 km, including 5.1 km tunnel to IGI Airport

  • Haryana Stretch: 29 km (inaugurated March 2024)

Boost to Mobility in NCR

Together, UER-II and the Dwarka Expressway are projected to substantially reduce travel time between Noida and IGI Airport, while easing pressure on Delhi’s Ring Road, NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapullah elevated corridor.

“These two roads will significantly reduce congestion in and around Delhi and NCR,” a senior NHAI official noted.
