Thiruvananthapuram, August 23, 2025 – Authorities have decided against hastily registering a case against MLA Rahul Mankootathil following a complaint alleging that he coerced a young woman into undergoing an abortion. The complaint, lodged by Ernakulam Central Police and the Child Rights Commission, was filed by High Court advocate Shinto Sebastian, reportedly a sympathizer of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The complaint was based solely on media reports, with the complainant failing to provide substantiate evidence. Legal advice received by the police suggests that proceeding with a case without a formal complaint from the victim could lead to setbacks in court.
Audio messages purportedly involving the MLA and the woman have surfaced, raising serious allegations of coercion. To protect the woman’s privacy, the audio was released with technical alterations to disguise her voice. Additionally, certain WhatsApp conversations have also been circulated. However, the police have been advised to register a case only if the victim herself comes forward with a formal complaint.
In the wake of the controversy, Rahul Mankootathil has resigned from his position as Youth Congress president but will continue to serve as an MLA. The Congress party has rejected calls for his resignation from the legislative position, opting instead for organizational measures. The party has announced that a committee will be appointed to investigate the allegations. Citing precedents, such as MLA M Mukesh continuing in his role despite similar controversies, the party is preparing to counter demands for Rahul’s resignation.
Cybercrime Case Against Nine Individuals
In a related development, a case has been registered against nine individuals for alleged cyber-attacks targeting expatriate writer Hani Bhaskar. The writer filed a complaint with the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police, citing harassment following her public statements regarding the allegations against Rahul Mankootathil. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, with charges including defamation, unauthorized use of images, violation of dignity, and invasion of privacy.
Hani Bhaskar shared the First Information Report (FIR) on her Facebook account, accompanied by a note praising the swift and exemplary response of the legal system and the Chief Minister’s office. She emphasized that the incident underscores the legal system’s commitment to supporting women against violations. Bhaskar also acknowledged the support provided by the cyber police and expressed gratitude to all those who stood by her.
