Washington, August 23, 2025 – The nomination of Sergio Gore as the United States Ambassador to India has ignited discussions, largely centered on his contentious history with billionaire Elon Musk. Once a close ally of former US President Donald Trump, Musk stepped down from the administration in May amid a highly publicized rift with Trump. During this period, Musk famously labeled Gore a “snake,” a term implying deceit, following reports that Gore failed to submit required personal records despite a review of thousands of government employees’ files by the White House Personnel Office. The White House has since dismissed these reports, affirming that Gore retains the necessary security clearance.
The friction between the two figures extends beyond administrative disputes. Tensions escalated during cabinet meetings, where Gore faced criticism from Musk over hiring practices. A notable point of contention was Musk’s proposal to appoint his friend Jared Isaacman as NASA chief, which Gore reportedly thwarted by presenting Trump with a file detailing Isaacman’s past donations to Democrats, leading to the nomination’s withdrawal. This move further fueled Musk’s frustration.
Musk’s resignation from the head of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE) was also attributed to his ongoing disputes with Gore, compounded by a public disagreement with Trump over a budget bill. Musk argued that the legislation would increase the budget deficit and undermine efforts to cut costs, a stance that preceded his exit.
Gore, 38, has rapidly emerged as a powerful figure in the White House over recent months. He has overseen the meticulous vetting of approximately 4,000 government appointments, earning him both allies and adversaries. However, his lack of substantial foreign policy experience raises questions. His notable engagements include accompanying Trump on foreign trips and overseeing the dismissal of National Security Council staff under questionable circumstances, marking the extent of his international portfolio.
Born in Uzbekistan, part of the former Soviet Union, Gore relocated to Malta as a child before immigrating to the United States. He built a career in Republican politics, working alongside Senator Rand Paul, later transitioning into fundraising for Trump, publishing books, and even serving as a wedding DJ before rising to prominence in the administration.
Gore is set to join the ranks of distinguished US ambassadors to India, including economist John Kenneth Galbraith and sociologist Daniel Patrick Moynihan. His predecessor, Eric Garcetti, selected by President Joe Biden, was the former mayor of Los Angeles and had studied Hindi and Urdu in his youth. Garcetti retired in January, leaving Foreign Affairs Officer Jorgun K. Andrews to serve temporarily until Gore’s appointment.
