Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, describing the loss as a profound blow to the state’s cultural identity. Garg, best known nationally for his iconic song “Ya Ali”, passed away in Singapore at the age of 52, reportedly during a scuba diving activity.
Taking to social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote:
“Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am at a loss for words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early—this was not an age to go.”
A household name across India, and particularly revered in Assam, Garg rose to prominence in the 1990s and went on to become one of the most celebrated voices from the region. Praising his unparalleled artistry, Sarma noted:
“He has left a void that will never be filled. Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam’s culture, and his works will inspire many more talented artists in the days and years to come.”
The passing of Zubeen Garg marks the end of an era in Assam’s musical journey, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to resonate for generations.
