Assam to Conduct Fresh Autopsy on Zubeen Garg Amid Allegations

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that a fresh autopsy will be conducted on legendary singer Zubeen Garg, following allegations of foul play in his death. The renowned artist, 52, passed away last week in Singapore after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island.

The new autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at Guwahati Medical College, overseen by a team of experts from AIIMS Guwahati. Initially, reports had cited a scuba diving accident as the cause of death. However, the Singaporean authorities issued a death certificate stating that Garg died from drowning.

Sarma clarified that the death certificate is separate from a post-mortem report, which the government is actively working to obtain. "The death certificate we received states drowning as the cause. We are in contact with the Singapore Ambassador to get the full post-mortem report as soon as possible," he told the press.

Funeral Preparations and Memorial in the Works

Preparations are underway for the singer's funeral, which is set to take place at 8 a.m. Tuesday in his native Kamarkuchi NC village. In a mark of respect, the Assam government has acquired 10 bighas of land to build a memorial for the artist, as requested by his family.

"Zubeen was a very popular artist, and people from all over Assam and the entire country have come to pay their respects," said Assam Minister Atul Bora.

On Sunday, thousands of fans gathered at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati to pay their last respects to the icon, whose mortal remains were kept there in a glass casket.

Zubeen's wife, Garima, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support. "If Zubeen were alive today, he would have been overwhelmed by this show of love. On his behalf, I thank each of you," she said.

A Look at the Events Leading to His Death

Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival and was scheduled to perform on September 20 and 21. His wife stated that he had gone swimming with a group of friends when he suffered a seizure.

"Zubeen, along with seven or eight others, including drummer Shekhar and Sidhartha, went to the island on a yacht. All of them were wearing life jackets. But Zubeen went to swim again and suffered a seizure attack," Garima shared.

His body was flown to New Delhi on Saturday and reached Guwahati on Sunday morning. A massive crowd of fans lined the 25-kilometer route from the airport to his residence, taking nearly six hours to cover the distance.

The Assam government had declared a three-day state mourning period from Saturday to Monday in his honor, canceling all official celebratory events.

Zubeen Garg's career spanned over 30 years, during which he sang in 40 languages, including Bengali, Hindi, and Assamese. He achieved national fame with his iconic song "Ya Ali" from the 2006 film Gangster.
