For the second consecutive day, unrest persisted outside the Nepali Army headquarters in Bhadrakali as Gen Z protesters remained divided over the choice of an interim leader.
On Thursday afternoon, rival groups supporting former Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah clashed in a heated confrontation, each camp demanding its preferred candidate to head the interim government.
The discord comes against the backdrop of widespread grievances over corruption, nepotism, and unemployment, which erupted into violent protests earlier this week. The unrest intensified after Tuesday evening’s ban on social media, which sparked deadly clashes across the Kathmandu Valley.
In response, Army officials had directed the protesters to present a unified choice for interim leadership by the following morning. Instead, divisions deepened, with factions arguing and debating over who should lead Nepal’s transitional government.
