Dubai/New Delhi, September 30 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to raise concerns at Tuesday’s Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dubai over what it alleges is the “personal possession” of the Asia Cup 2025 trophy by ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi, CNN-News18 has learned.
According to sources, the trophy is not at the ACC headquarters in Dubai, and the BCCI believes its custody is irregular. The Indian board is expected to demand that the trophy, which India claimed after defeating Pakistan in a dramatic final on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, be handed over to its rightful holders.
The ACC meeting, scheduled for 2:00 pm local time (3:30 pm IST), was originally convened to conclude the Annual General Meeting adjourned in Dhaka in July. However, the trophy dispute is now expected to take centre stage. If Naqvi does not accede to the BCCI’s request, officials say India has further steps in place.
BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, who serves as the board’s Executive Member on the ACC, or former treasurer Ashish Shelar, the BCCI’s Ex-Officio Member, will represent India at the meeting. The BCCI also intends to escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) during its November meeting, underscoring the seriousness with which it views the issue.
Trophy Presentation Standoff
The controversy stems from Sunday’s trophy ceremony following India’s last-over victory over Pakistan. Indian players refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy and medals from Naqvi, citing his history of anti-India remarks. India proposed that the presentation instead be made by Emirates Cricket Board’s Khalid Al Zarooni or Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Aminul Islam, but Naqvi reportedly insisted he alone would present the awards.
In an unprecedented move, Naqvi left the stage with ACC officials and the trophy, leaving Indian players to celebrate their victory in unconventional style. The team playfully held up coffee cups and imaginary trophies, a gesture that was met with widespread applause from fans.
The unusual episode has now escalated into a diplomatic flashpoint within the cricketing fraternity, with the BCCI determined to reclaim the physical trophy it believes is rightfully theirs.
