India sharply countered Pakistan’s allegations at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Tuesday, reminding its neighbour of its record of bombing its own citizens and exporting terrorism worldwide.
“A delegation that epitomises the antithesis of this approach continues to abuse this forum with baseless and provocative statements against India,” said Kshitij Tyagi, India’s representative at the UNHRC, in remarks that have since gone viral. “Instead of coveting our territory, they would do well to vacate the Indian land under their illegal occupation and focus on rescuing an economy on life support, a polity muzzled by military dominance, and a human rights record stained by persecution. Perhaps once they find time away from exporting terrorism, harbouring UN-proscribed terrorists, and bombing their own people, they might contribute meaningfully to this forum,” he added.
Tyagi’s remarks came during Agenda Item 4 of the UNHRC session, in reference to a recent Pakistani Air Force strike in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In the early hours of Monday, Pakistani JF-17 fighter jets reportedly dropped eight LS-6 bombs on Matre Dara village in Tirah Valley. According to DD News, at least 30 people, including women and children, were killed, with harrowing images showing civilian bodies scattered in the aftermath.
The incident has once again spotlighted the deep roots of insurgency in Pakistan’s tribal regions. Following the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters crossed into Pakistan’s tribal belt, where militancy flourished. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), formed in 2007 under Baitullah Mehsud, transformed the region into a hub of extremism, targeting both security forces and civilians. In response, the Pakistani Army launched multiple counterinsurgency operations, including Operation Zarb-e-Azb in 2014 and Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad in 2017, claiming significant gains but failing to eliminate the insurgent threat entirely.
