Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the devastating stampede at his political rally in Karur, which claimed 39 lives and left several others injured.
In a heartfelt statement on X (formerly Twitter), Vijay wrote, “The incident in Karur is beyond imagination. My heart and mind are weighed down with immense grief. The faces of those I have met keep flashing before me. As I think of the affection and care of my loved ones, my heart sinks further. With indescribable pain, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, and I stand with you in this time of sorrow.”
Vijay also announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. Each bereaved family will receive ₹20 lakh, while the injured undergoing treatment will be given ₹2 lakh. “This amount, though small in the face of such irreparable loss, is my duty as one among your family. With a heavy heart, I assure you of my support,” he said.
He further prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and pledged that TVK would extend every necessary assistance. “By the grace of God, may we find strength to recover from this tragedy,” he added.
Compensation and Probe Announced
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin declared ₹10 lakh compensation for the kin of those who died and ₹1 lakh for the injured. The state government has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, to be led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
A Tragedy Unfolds
At least 39 people were killed and over 59 injured when an overwhelming crowd led to a stampede during the TVK rally in Karur. Videos from the scene showed tightly packed attendees suddenly pushed forward, causing many to stumble and fall. Panic ensued as people struggled to escape the crush, with children seen clinging to their parents’ shoulders in the moments before the tragedy struck.
Eyewitness accounts and video clips revealed chaotic scenes of people screaming for help as police and volunteers rushed to pull individuals to safety.
During the rally, as the crowd swelled and suffocation set in, Vijay briefly halted his address to distribute water and arrange ambulances for those in distress. Following the incident, he flew from Trichy to Chennai, refraining from public comment until later in the evening, when he broke his silence with a statement filled with anguish: “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur, and I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment.”
The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu government. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin personally visited Karur, meeting victims’ families and assuring them of government support.
