The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) has paid tribute to former Armagh All-Ireland champion Aoife Lennon, who tragically lost her life in a road traffic collision on Wednesday, September 10. She was 38.
Lennon, a native of Derrynoose, Co Armagh, was a member of the Armagh squad that won the Ulster Junior title in 2004 and later secured a TG4 All-Ireland Junior Championship medal in 2005. At club level, she also celebrated success with Derrynoose GAC, winning a Junior Championship medal.
The fatal crash occurred on the N2 at Castleshane, Co Monaghan, when the car she was driving collided with a lorry at around 2.45 p.m. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Lennon was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
In addition to her achievements on the pitch, Lennon made a lasting contribution to Gaelic Games as an Ulster GAA coach, visiting schools across Armagh to introduce children to the sport. From 2007 to 2018, she worked as a Key Stage 1 Coach on Ulster GAA’s DENI Programme.
LGFA President Trina Murray led the tributes, describing Lennon as an outstanding footballer, coach, and role model:
“News of Aoife’s passing has come as a huge shock to all of us at the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. We watched Aoife wearing the colours of Derrynoose and Armagh with distinction for many years, and she was a truly wonderful footballer. In a coaching capacity, Aoife displayed exemplary skills, inspiring and touching the lives of many young people. An extremely warm and caring person, Aoife has left a long-lasting legacy. Her life has been cut short far too soon. On behalf of everyone at the LGFA, I extend our sympathies to Aoife’s wife Karen, her family, and her many friends. Aoife was a trailblazer whose passing leaves a huge void. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.”
Her club, Derrynoose GAC, expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, remembering her as a cherished former player:
“The members of Derrynoose GAC deeply regret the death of Aoife Lennon, who tragically passed away on Wednesday. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aoife’s wife Karen, her parents Seamus and Adele, her brothers Patrick and Sean, her sisters-in-law Michelle and Michaella, her nephew Jamie, nieces Grace and Lila, and her extended family circle.”
Ulster GAA also paid tribute, noting her contribution as a colleague and coach:
“It is with deep sadness that Ulster GAA mourns the tragic passing of our former colleague, Aoife Lennon. She was a valued member of our team for over a decade, working as a Key Stage 1 Coach on the DENI Programme. We offer our deepest condolences to her wife Karen, her parents Seamus and Adele, her brothers Patrick and Sean, and the wider Lennon family.”
A funeral notice described Lennon as a “devoted wife of Karen and dearly beloved daughter of Seamus (Jamie) and Adele, cherished sister of Patrick (Michelle) and Sean (Micheala), and dear daughter-in-law of Ann and Kevin.”
Her funeral will take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. at St Mochua’s Church, Derrynoose, where family, friends, teammates, and the wider GAA community will gather to bid farewell.
