Churachandpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the people of Manipur to embrace peace and unity, stressing that stability, justice, and truth are essential for development.
The appeal came during Modi’s first visit to the state in two years, following the outbreak of ethnic violence in 2023. Addressing a public gathering at Churachandpur’s Peace Ground after inaugurating a series of development projects, the Prime Minister said:
“I appeal to all organisations to move forward together peacefully, fulfil your dreams, and secure a better future for your children. Manipur—this land once held hope and dreams, but was also caught in the grip of violence. For development to take place anywhere, peace is essential along with truth and justice.”
Earlier in the day, Modi met families displaced by the violence, many of whom continue to live in relief camps. He also interacted with children at the venue, accepting a bouquet and a painting from them, and was presented with a traditional feathered hat.
Reflecting on his interactions, he said:
“The land of Manipur is a land of hope and aspiration. Unfortunately, violence had cast its shadow on this beautiful region. After meeting those affected, I can say with confidence that a new dawn of hope and trust is rising in Manipur. For development, peace is essential.”
The Prime Minister’s visit comes against the backdrop of continuing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have left over 260 people dead and displaced nearly 50,000 since May 2023.
During the visit, Modi laid the foundation stone for development projects worth more than ₹7,300 crore, covering road infrastructure, women’s welfare, and other initiatives aimed at rebuilding and revitalising the state.
