Modi, Xi, and Putin Share Lighter Moment at SCO Summit in Tianjin

Tianjin, China | September 1, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin were seen sharing a candid exchange and posing together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, underscoring the forum’s role as a stage for both diplomacy and camaraderie.

Ahead of their formal engagements, Modi and Putin exchanged a warm hug and handshake, reflecting the depth of their personal rapport. Later, Prime Minister Modi posted photographs with the Russian leader on X, calling the interaction “always a delight.” The two leaders are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting following the plenary session of the summit.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the Prime Minister would use his plenary address to outline India’s vision for fostering regional cooperation under the SCO framework. “After this engagement, he will meet President Putin for bilateral talks, following which he will depart for India,” Misri said on Sunday.

Earlier in the summit, Modi also met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders welcomed what they described as positive momentum in bilateral ties since their last meeting at the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024. They reaffirmed that India and China are “development partners, not rivals,” stressing that differences should not escalate into disputes. Modi emphasised that peace and stability along the border remain essential for advancing cooperation, while both leaders highlighted the importance of mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity in building a stable relationship—one they said was critical not only for their nations’ progress but also for advancing a multipolar Asia and multipolar world.

The SCO, founded in 2001, today comprises 10 full members: India, Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, alongside observers and dialogue partners. India, which joined as a full member in 2017 after over a decade as an observer, previously chaired the SCO Council of Heads of Government in 2020 and the SCO Council of Heads of State from 2022 to 2023.
