Nepal’s Gen Z Protests Escalate: Residences of Top Leaders Attacked, Finance Minister Beaten in Public

Kathmandu: Nepal’s political turmoil deepened on Tuesday as Gen Z protesters vandalised the private residences of outgoing President Ram Chandra Poudel and recently resigned Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, while Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was chased and assaulted on the streets by demonstrators.

A video circulating on social media shows Paudel running for his life as more than two dozen protesters pursued him. At least one man was seen kicking him while others struck him before security personnel intervened. The footage, though widely shared, has not been independently verified by Indians Daily

The violence follows Monday’s deadly clashes in which at least 19 people were killed and over 300 injured when security forces opened fire on demonstrators demanding accountability for corruption and abuse of power.

Protesters also torched the residences of senior leaders, including former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who had resigned only a day earlier. Incendiary objects, believed to be Molotov cocktails, were hurled over security barricades at multiple sites.

Crowds stormed the Parliament building, setting parts of it ablaze, while Oli’s office was ransacked by agitators shouting slogans such as “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (“KP thief, leave the country”) and “Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders.” Helicopters were seen evacuating ministers as protesters advanced into restricted zones of the capital.

The Gen Z movement—largely student-led—has used social media platforms to expose the extravagant lifestyles of politicians’ families, alleging they are funded through corruption. The protests were further fuelled by last week’s now-revoked ban on social media platforms, which demonstrators say was an attempt to stifle dissent.

With the presidency and prime ministership vacant and ministers under siege, Nepal faces its gravest political crisis in years, raising fears that the army could step in to restore order.
