On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee C P Radhakrishnan secured a decisive victory in the Vice Presidential election, defeating the opposition's candidate, B Sudershan Reddy. The election was necessitated by the unexpected resignation of the incumbent Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar.
A total of 767 Members of Parliament (MPs) participated in the election, with 15 votes declared invalid. Radhakrishnan garnered 452 votes, while Reddy secured 300 votes, reflecting a clear mandate for the NDA candidate. Thirteen MPs, including those from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and Independents, abstained from voting.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh highlighted the opposition's unity, stating on X, "The Opposition has stood united. ALL of its 315 MPs have turned up for voting. This is an unprecedented 100% turnout."
C P Radhakrishnan, a seasoned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Tamil Nadu and the current Governor of Maharashtra, brings a wealth of experience to the role. The 67-year-old's political journey began with his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Jan Sangh. He served as a two-term Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore during Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure and later led the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
Radhakrishnan is expected to take the oath as India’s 15th Vice President in September 2025, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career.
