Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur have arrested a moneylender in connection with the alleged suicide of a businessman, his wife, and their child on August 27. The accused, identified as Shanky Anand, was taken into custody on Sunday.
The tragedy, coupled with a separate case involving another man who consumed poison alleging harassment by a corporator, sparked widespread outrage in the city.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi confirmed that Anand admitted to lending money illegally at 12 per cent interest without holding a licence. During investigations, police recovered incriminating evidence from his phone, including audio recordings in which he verbally abused the deceased and pressured him to repay dues within 48 hours. Anand also confessed to harassing the deceased’s wife regarding repayment and disclosed that other moneylenders had also extended high-interest loans to the victim.
In response, the police have issued a toll-free helpline (78-39-860-856) for citizens to report harassment by moneylenders. Five special teams have also been constituted to investigate similar cases.
“No moneylender will be spared. Strict action will be taken, and offenders will be booked under the Gangsters Act,” SP Dwivedi asserted.
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday staged protests demanding tougher action against moneylenders. District president Tanvir Khwaja alleged that usurers in Shahjahanpur were operating a “network of exploitation” and held them responsible for both the recent tragedies.
