KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Monday dismantled a stage erected by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) near the Gandhi statue in Kolkata’s Maidan, citing violation of permit regulations. The structure, originally sanctioned for two days in accordance with Supreme Court directions, had remained for nearly a month despite repeated reminders, officials said.
A defence spokesperson clarified that events at the Maidan require special clearance from the Ministry of Defence if extended beyond two days. “Permission was granted for two days, but the stage was not removed despite multiple reminders. The Kolkata Police were present to ensure law and order during the dismantling,” the official stated.
The action triggered sharp political reactions. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of “using the Army as a political tool,” while appealing to the forces to remain neutral. “I don’t blame the Army, but I urge them not to play into the BJP’s hands. The Army should have consulted the Kolkata Police before dismantling the stage,” she said.
The TMC alleged political vendetta, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claiming, “First ED, then CBI, and now the Army—this is nothing but targeted harassment.” The party announced it would shift its protest to Rani Rashmoni Road.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, intensified his criticism of the TMC, declaring that Bengal “needs freedom from violence, scams, and appeasement.”
The Maidan, a historic public ground in the heart of Kolkata, falls under the jurisdiction of the Army’s Eastern Command, headquartered at Fort William.
