Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the decision to impose a 50% tariff on India created strains in bilateral relations. He made the admission during an interview with Fox News.
“India was Russia’s largest customer. Because they were purchasing oil from Russia, I imposed a 50% tariff on India. It wasn’t an easy step—it was a major decision. And yes, it caused a rift in our relationship with India,” Trump said.
The U.S. administration initially levied a 25% tariff, which was later increased to 50% from August 27. Trump said the move was aimed at pressuring Moscow to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
He also remarked that his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin was “wearing thin.”
At the same time, Trump indicated that efforts were underway to ease trade frictions with New Delhi. He noted that discussions were ongoing and confirmed that he would be speaking directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issues.
