Aboard Air Force One/Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he does not believe the moment is right to call for a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, despite mounting international pressure.
Responding to a reporter’s question aboard Air Force One on whether it was time to press for a truce—one month after his rare face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska—Trump replied:
“It doesn’t feel like it. But at the right time, if I have to do it, it will be harsh.”
Trump, who has alternately criticized both Moscow and Kyiv, acknowledged last week that brokering peace may prove more difficult than anticipated. At a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his UK visit on Thursday, Trump said Putin had “really let me down.”
The US president also warned of tougher measures against Russia, saying he would impose “major sanctions” if all NATO members agreed to halt purchases of Russian oil. Writing on his Truth Social platform, he emphasized:
“This is not TRUMP’S WAR (it would never have started if I was president!). It is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s WAR.”
Moscow Responds
In a television interview aired in Russia on Thursday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Trump had shifted his position, moving “from issuing an ultimatum for an unconditional ceasefire to advocating for a long-term, sustainable solution.”
Russia continues to insist that Ukraine recognize its redrawn borders, abandon its NATO membership ambitions in favor of permanent neutrality, and agree to military limitations—conditions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has categorically rejected.
