The Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has petitioned the Madras High Court to transfer the investigation into the Karur tragedy to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing concerns over the impartiality of the Tamil Nadu Police.
The plea was filed by Aadhav Arjuna, General Secretary of TVK’s Election Campaign Management, who alleged that both the state government and the police acted in a partisan manner. According to the petition, TVK was allotted narrow and unsuitable venues for its rallies, power supply was deliberately disrupted during events, and miscreants infiltrated the Karur rally, pelting stones and slippers at actor-politician Vijay and his supporters.
The petition further claims that police resorted to lathi charges on innocent attendees and that the deployment of ambulances without patients exacerbated panic, contributing to the stampede that claimed 41 lives, including nine children, on Saturday.
TVK’s Demands
In its plea, TVK urged the court to:
-
Transfer the probe to the CBI for an impartial inquiry.
-
Secure CCTV footage from the rally venue.
-
Grant an ad-interim injunction permitting Vijay and party members to visit victims and bereaved families without interference.
Earlier, former AIADMK interim general secretary VK Sasikala had also called for a CBI probe into the Karur stampede, asserting that only a central agency investigation could uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, the Karur Police have registered a case against TVK office-bearers under provisions including negligence. Forensic experts have begun their probe, examining key locations such as a sewer where bodies were reportedly found.
As a mark of respect to the deceased, traders and commercial establishments in Karur observed a shutdown.
The stampede occurred during a political rally addressed by Vijay.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each victim and ₹50,000 for the injured. The Tamil Nadu government has separately announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured.
