Fraud often finds its victims no matter how cautious they may be. The latest incident in Khammam city serves as yet another reminder of the elaborate tricks con artists employ.
A 55-year-old woman from Bosubomma Centre in Khammam, originally from Konijarla mandal, fell prey to a gold bar scam on September 20. According to police, the woman was walking home from the old bus stand when an unidentified woman began following her. Near Andhra Bank at Gandhi Chowk, the stranger threw a parcel in front of her, claiming it contained a gold biscuit.
The woman was persuaded to pick it up and told she could keep a share if she contributed money. Soon, another accomplice appeared, insisting that the “gold bar” was genuine and worth more than ₹10 lakh. Convinced, the victim handed over ₹10,000 in cash along with a gold chain weighing around two tolas.
The accused assured her they would wait at Keshav Rao Park until she brought the remaining money. When the woman returned, she discovered that the so-called gold was counterfeit and the fraudsters had disappeared. Realising she had been duped, she filed a complaint with the police.
The Khammam Three Town Police have registered a case and released photographs of the suspects. Authorities have appealed to the public to report any information that could help trace the culprits.
