Dublin, October 24, 2025: Gardaí have launched an investigation into the alleged assault of two women following a disturbing incident in which a man verbally abused Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and supporters of independent TD Catherine Connolly on Dublin’s North Strand.
Shocking footage circulating online shows a man shouting expletives at Ms. McDonald and others during a canvassing event on Friday afternoon. In the video, the man admits to slapping a woman, claiming she tried to take his phone while he was filming. He can be seen circling the group, repeatedly hurling abuse at those present—including Ms. McDonald—and using obscene language in the presence of a child.
At one point, the man is heard saying, “Slap the phone out of my hand, you got a slap in the face,” before responding to a woman who warned him about her child with, “F** your child.”* He continues to verbally threaten the crowd, stating, “I’ll give her another bleeding slap in the face now, I will,” and “Your time will come.”
A woman in the footage can be seen calling Gardaí as the man continues his tirade.
Confirming the investigation, a Garda spokesperson said:
“Gardaí responded to a report of an assault involving two females on North Strand Road, Dublin 1, which occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, October 24, 2025. No medical treatment was required at the scene; however, An Garda Síochána understands that one of the females has since attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.”
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information or video footage related to the incident to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 666 8000.
A Sinn Féin spokesperson also confirmed the assault, stating:
“A man assaulted a young woman who was part of a team getting out the vote near the Five Lamps in the north inner city. Gardaí were called and are now investigating. The woman has been taken to hospital for medical examination. This incident occurred as Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvassing team, which is continuing its work.”
The footage has drawn widespread condemnation online, with political figures and citizens alike calling for swift action against the perpetrator. Gardaí continue to examine video evidence and witness statements as part of their ongoing investigation.
