India, China Hold Fresh Commander-Level Talks Amid Signs of Thaw in Bilateral Ties

New Delhi, October 29, 2025 — India and China have conducted a fresh round of corps commander-level talks aimed at easing tensions and maintaining stability along the western sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to a statement released by China’s Ministry of Defence, the discussions were “positive and in-depth,” with both sides exchanging views on maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border region. The talks, the ministry said, were held in accordance with the “important consensus” reached between the leaders of the two nations, and both sides agreed to continue engagement through military and diplomatic channels.

The two countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to jointly uphold peace along the frontier, a region that has witnessed prolonged friction since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

Direct Flights Resume After Five-Year Hiatus

In a parallel sign of thawing relations, India and China have resumed direct passenger flights after a gap of more than four years. Air connectivity between the two nations had been suspended since early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

Private carrier IndiGo has now restarted services linking Kolkata and Guangzhou, with daily non-stop flights that began operations on October 26.

At a brief ceremony at Kolkata airport, Chinese Deputy Consul General Qin Yong described the resumption of direct flights as a “very important day” in the trajectory of India–China relations.

“After five years of suspension, this marks a significant improvement in bilateral ties. We have long awaited this development, and it reflects the progress achieved through recent high-level consensus,” Qin said, speaking to news agency ANI.

The inaugural IndiGo flight carried 176 passengers, and the occasion was marked with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony attended by airline representatives, airport officials, and passengers.

Qin described the resumption of flights as the “first fruit” of renewed engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, adding that the two nations should prioritise partnership over rivalry.

“We are partners, not rivals. As long-time neighbours with millennia of shared history, we should learn from one another and expand cooperation across all sectors,” Qin said.
“As key members of BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and the Global South, both China and India have a responsibility to strengthen collaboration — not just for our bilateral interests, but for global economic stability.”

The simultaneous diplomatic and commercial outreach signals a cautious yet notable effort by both sides to stabilise ties after years of strained relations and limited engagement.
