Vendor Assaults Passenger Over Failed UPI Payment at Jabalpur Railway Station

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh — October 17: An incident at Jabalpur Railway Station, often referred to as the cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh, has sparked outrage and embarrassment for the Indian Railways after a licensed food vendor allegedly assaulted a passenger and forcibly took his wristwatch over a failed UPI transaction.

According to reports, the incident took place around 5:30 p.m. on October 17 at Platform No. 5 of Jabalpur Railway Station.

The Incident

As the train arrived at the platform, a passenger purchased two samosas from a station vendor and attempted to pay via UPI (Unified Payments Interface). However, before the payment could be processed, the train began to move.

When the passenger turned to board the train, the vendor reportedly stopped him, claiming that the UPI payment had failed. The situation quickly escalated when the vendor grabbed the passenger by the collar and demanded cash payment on the spot.

Caught in a moment of helplessness as the train continued to move, the passenger reportedly removed his wristwatch and handed it over to the vendor in exchange for the food he had bought.

Viral Video and Social Media Uproar

Another passenger present on the platform recorded the entire episode on a mobile phone. The video soon surfaced on social media and was widely circulated after being tagged to the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Railway Ministry. Within hours, the footage went viral, prompting swift public outrage and demands for accountability.

Railway Authorities Take Action

Responding to the incident, Jabalpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) ordered immediate disciplinary action. The vendor’s license was cancelled with immediate effect, and the authorities launched an internal inquiry into the matter.

Railway officials also issued strict instructions to all station vendors, warning that any form of misconduct or misbehavior toward passengers would invite severe penalties.

Criticism has also been directed at station administrators responsible for vendor licensing, with many calling the episode “a disgraceful breach of public trust” and “a blot on the railway’s passenger service standards.”

Public Reaction

The viral video has reignited debate over vendor regulation and passenger safety at railway stations. Commuters and social media users alike have urged the Ministry of Railways to enforce stricter monitoring of platform vendors and ensure transparency in digital transactions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
