A key component of heating systems in more than 100,000 homes and businesses across Ireland is being urgently recalled after it was discovered that it could cause fatal electric shocks.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued an emergency safety recall of approximately 114,000 Tucson circulating pumps, and a major replacement program is underway. The pumps found to be at risk are Tucson 5m, 6m and 8m pumps manufactured from 2017 to 2024.
People who have pumps in homes and businesses and who work on such equipment have been warned not to touch electrical connections or attempt to change, service or adjust the pumps.
The potentially fatal error came to light after the health and safety authority referred a case to the CCPC earlier this year.
The CCPC said customers who have had work done on their heating systems in the past eight years should have their systems checked immediately. However, they warned against touching the pumps.
The working pumps pose no immediate risk, but anyone who wants to do it themselves has been warned not to attempt replacement work, while professionals who service, repair, replace or otherwise work on heating systems have been told to "familiarize themselves" with the details of the recall.
The CCPC said that merchants are "perhaps most at risk of serious electrical shock." They have been asked to visit the CCPC and Tucson Pumps websites to understand the risk. They have been warned to "not touch the electrical connection of the affected pump."
Tucson circulating pumps cost a little over €100 and are about the size of a 1kg bag of sugar. They have a circular label that says Tucson on them and are usually found on hot presses or on walls near heating systems.
Pumps are the centerpiece of many modern heating and cooling systems, ensuring a steady supply of heat or cold at low pressure and maintaining a constant flow rather than increasing pressure.
Instructions for customers:
Users should not have any contact with the electrical connection of the pump. Failure to take safety precautions can be life-threatening.
Pumps starting with any of the following serial numbers should be replaced. Users should immediately stop using them and contact the manufacturer or distributor.
You should check for pumps with the Tucson brand, and there should be no contact with the pump. Find the serial number on the front of the pump.
The serial number, which is a series of numbers starting with S/N, can be identified by looking at the pump's label. S/NAS/NBS/NCS/N D44 or earlier S/N 2017 S/N 2018 S/N 2019 S/N 2020. The affected Tucson 5m, 6m, and 8m pumps are:
Perform verification using serial number 2 websites.
