Proddatur (Kadapa), October 2025: In a shocking case from Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district, a 28-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother following a heated argument over money, locked his father in another room, and then calmly sat watching television as the body lay in the house.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Sriramnagar, Proddatur, where the accused, Yashwanth Kumar Reddy, attacked his mother, Lakshmi Devi, with a knife. Lakshmi, a schoolteacher, died on the spot from grievous injuries to her throat, police said.
According to preliminary reports, Yashwanth—who had completed a B.Tech degree and had been living in Hyderabad—returned home earlier that day and demanded money from his mother. When she reportedly refused, an argument broke out, during which he picked up a knife and attacked her.
As his father, Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy, tried to intervene, Yashwanth allegedly confined him to another room by locking the door from outside. The accused then remained inside the house, reportedly watching television until neighbors, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene and called the police.
Police from Three Town Station, led by CI Venu Gopal, reached the spot and arrested the accused without resistance. The body was shifted to the Government Hospital in Proddatur for post-mortem examination.
Officials suspect that the accused may have been under psychological or emotional distress, though no formal medical report has yet confirmed this.
“This appears to be a case arising from a domestic dispute. We are investigating all angles, including mental health concerns,” said a senior police officer.
The murder has sent shockwaves through the locality, with residents describing the victim as a kind and devoted teacher. “It is hard to believe that such a thing could happen in a quiet neighborhood like ours,” said one neighbor.
A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
