Chennai: A shocking case has emerged in Tamil Nadu where a man named Surya allegedly deceived several women by luring them into relationships under the pretext of marriage, exploiting them emotionally and financially. The accused was arrested recently and produced before a Tahsildar for questioning, where he was warned to maintain good conduct henceforth.
According to police sources, Surya targeted women for gold jewelry, money, and property, gaining their trust through matrimonial websites. One of the complainants, a 24-year-old nurse working at a private hospital in Choolai Nagar, Chennai, lodged a complaint last month at the All Women Police Station in Anna Nagar.
She stated that Surya had introduced himself on a matrimonial platform, promised marriage, and gradually persuaded her to invest in a plot of land with him. During this time, he allegedly took ₹8 lakh in cash, nine sovereigns of gold jewelry, a laptop, and a high-end mobile phone from her before abruptly cutting off contact and refusing to marry her.
Following her complaint, a special police team led by Inspector Latha began an investigation, which revealed a far more disturbing pattern. Surya, police said, had duped over 50 women using the same method — promising marriage, entering into relationships, and then absconding with their valuables.
Investigations confirmed that Surya falsely claimed to be involved in real estate business to win the trust of his victims. After gaining their confidence, he would engage in sexual relationships, switch off his phone, and disappear to another town.
The accused was finally tracked down and arrested in Tirunelveli district before being brought to Chennai. However, during police custody, Surya attempted to escape while being escorted to relieve himself. In the ensuing commotion, he fell, fracturing his right leg, and was later admitted to a hospital for treatment before being remanded to Puzhal Central Prison.
Magistrate’s Stern Warning
On Wednesday, Surya was brought to the Aminjikarai Taluk Office under heavy police security, where he was issued a Good Conduct Certificate. The Tahsildar sternly warned him that any future offense against women — whether physical, verbal, written, or electronic — would lead to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.
The Magistrate personally read out the conditions of the affidavit, instructing Surya not to contact any of his previous victims directly or indirectly, not to visit their homes or workplaces, and not to stalk or harass them online. “Violation of these conditions will attract severe punishment,” the officer warned.
After signing the good conduct affidavit, Surya was remanded back to Puzhal Prison.
A Shocking Revelation
What has further shocked investigators is that Surya’s father is reportedly a retired officer from a central intelligence agency, raising questions about how the accused managed to evade detection for so long.
The police continue to trace additional victims and are investigating whether Surya operated with the help of any accomplices. Officials described the case as one of the most systematic instances of emotional and financial exploitation reported in the state in recent years.
