Cork, October 15: A third person has been charged in connection with the murder of Barry Daly, a 44-year-old postman and father of four, who was fatally attacked outside his home in Doneraile, County Cork over the weekend.
A 16-year-old boy appeared before Midleton District Court this morning charged with Mr. Daly’s murder, which occurred in the early hours of October 12 outside his residence at Rockview Terrace.
Detective Garda David Forsythe gave evidence of the teenager’s arrest, charge, and caution. He told the court that the accused made no reply when charged under caution at 10:26 p.m. on Tuesday at Cobh Garda Station.
Under Irish law, an application for bail cannot be made at district court level in cases involving murder. Sergeant Linda O’Leary informed the court that Gardaí were seeking a remand in detention until October 21, when the accused will next appear before Mallow District Court.
Defence solicitor Don Ryan confirmed that his client qualified for free legal aid, a request that was granted by Judge Colm Roberts. Mr. Ryan further requested that the accused receive appropriate support and care while held at Oberstown Children Detention Campus.
Judge Roberts acknowledged the request, stating that Oberstown staff are trained and experienced in managing such sensitive cases. The teenager was subsequently remanded in detention at Oberstown until his next court appearance.
Two Others Already Charged
On Tuesday, Alex Deady, 20, of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, and a 17-year-old male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also appeared before Mallow District Court charged with the murder of Mr. Daly.
The 17-year-old was remanded to Oberstown, while Deady was remanded in custody. Both will reappear before Mallow District Court on October 21, alongside the third accused, with all three expected to participate via video link.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to Rockview Terrace at around 2 a.m. on Sunday, where Mr. Daly was discovered with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí conducted a technical examination of the area, and the investigation was later upgraded to a murder probe following the completion of a post-mortem examination carried out by Assistant State Pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster at Cork University Hospital.
Tributes and Family
Mr. Daly, a well-known employee of An Post, is remembered as a devoted partner and father. He is survived by his partner Katie, their five children, his parents Liam and Ann, and his three siblings — Denise, Sharon, and Sarah — along with extended family and friends.
The tragic killing has deeply shocked the close-knit community of Doneraile, where residents have expressed grief and disbelief over the loss of a man described as “kind, hardworking, and family-oriented.”
