Dublin: Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has reported to Gardaí after being angrily confronted by two men while walking in central Dublin, in an incident captured on video and widely circulated online.
The footage, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by far-right activist Paul Nolan, shows the men cycling toward Varadkar on Parnell Street, shouting accusations of betrayal and targeting him over his political decisions. The video, just over 90 seconds long, has been viewed more than 27,000 times.
Varadkar told reporters:
“Thankfully it is a rare occurrence. I took videos and have provided them to the Gardaí. I will not be intimidated or told by anyone where I cannot walk in my own city, least of all Parnell Street, the street on which I was born.”
In the video, the men repeatedly call Varadkar a “traitor,” citing his role in promoting COVID-19 vaccinations and lockdown measures. Varadkar remains composed throughout, responding only briefly with, “Enjoy your day, gentlemen,” while recording the incident on his phone.
The activist responsible for posting the video, Paul Nolan, 36, of Mount Eagle Square, Leopardstown, Dublin, was recently sentenced to seven months in prison for online posts that risked identifying asylum seekers, marking Ireland’s first such conviction. He was released on bail pending appeal and has 47 prior convictions.
The confrontation occurred on Monday afternoon, and the Garda press office has been contacted for comment.
