Cairo, October 5: Efforts to end the war in Gaza are expected to intensify in Egypt after Hamas announced it had accepted parts of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan, according to a report by France 24.
President Trump has dispatched his son-in-law Jared Kushner and senior West Asia envoy Steve Witkoff to Cairo to lead the American mediation effort. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that a delegation from Israel will also travel to Egypt “to finalise technical details” of the proposed framework.
“Our goal is to confine these negotiations within a time frame of a few days,” Netanyahu said on Saturday, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
However, he ruled out a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, stating that the military would continue to hold key areas under its control. He added that Hamas would ultimately be disarmed “either through a diplomatic process or by a military path.”
Hamas Agrees to Hostage Release Under Trump’s Formula
In a statement released late Friday, Hamas said it had agreed to release all captives — both living and deceased — under the first phase of Trump’s proposed exchange formula. The plan reportedly includes a swap of hostages for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
President Trump welcomed Hamas’s announcement, calling it “a sign the group is ready for a lasting peace.” But in a follow-up statement on Saturday, he warned that Hamas must act swiftly, cautioning that “all bets will be off” if there are delays.
Despite Trump’s appeal for an immediate halt to Israeli airstrikes, bombardments on Gaza continued over the weekend. Gaza’s Civil Defence agency reported at least 70 deaths from strikes on Saturday, Al Jazeera said.
Egypt to Host Wider Palestinian Conference
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Cairo will convene a broader conference of Palestinian factions to discuss Gaza’s post-war political future. Hamas has expressed its intention to participate in shaping the territory’s governance, though Trump’s peace proposal stipulates that neither Hamas nor any other militant faction should administer Gaza.
A White House official confirmed that Kushner and Witkoff will coordinate the details of the hostage release and prisoner exchange in upcoming meetings. Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said delegations from Hamas and Israel are expected to join the talks on Monday, according to The Times of Israel.
