UK Court Sentences Romanian Couple to 17 Years in Prison for Fatal "Honey Trap" Drugging Spree

OXFORD, England — A Romanian couple who orchestrated a chilling online "honey trap" operation to drug and rob vulnerable men—resulting in the deaths of two victims—has been sentenced to 17 years in prison each by the Oxford Crown Court.

Adina Mihai, 31, and her partner Madalin Dumitru, 30, previously entered guilty pleas for manslaughter in connection with the deaths of two men, alongside charges of administering poison with intent to stupefy and multiple counts of robbery.

The "Honey Trap" Modus Operandi

According to investigators, Mihai used online advertisements offering adult services to lure victims to residential properties. Once the men arrived, the couple spiked their drinks with GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), a powerful and dangerous sedative often referred to as liquid ecstasy.

As the victims lost consciousness, the pair looted their belongings, making off with cash, luxury watches, and valuable jewelry while leaving the incapacitated men in critical condition.

The scheme turned fatal in two separate instances: 80-year-old Malcolm King and 37-year-old Gary Muwattu both died under identical circumstances after being drugged by the couple. Two other men targeted in the crime spree survived after being poisoned and rendered unconscious.

Forensic Breakthrough and Prosecution

Detectives cracked the case by piecing together a trail of digital footprints, financial transactions, and extensive CCTV footage that placed the couple at the scenes of the crimes and linked them directly to the victims' final hours. Forensic analysis confirmed the presence of GBL in the deceased victims' systems.

In sentencing the pair, the presiding judge emphasized the predatory and calculated nature of the plot, which preyed on victims under the guise of an illicit encounter. The case has sent shockwaves across the United Kingdom, drawing widespread international attention to the lethal dangers of GBL-facilitated robberies.
